By Matilda Glen as part of Journeys Festival International 2018
Crossing Borders is an outdoor art installation created by me (Matilda Glen) to raise awareness for the plight of refugees across Europe. This project is informed by volunteering at refugee camps in Calais, and how different this experience was from the news reports I received in the UK. The refugee crisis is high on the political and social agenda, and it impacts on all of our lives. It is an issue close to my heart, and having had first-hand experience of the conditions in Northern France’s refugee camps I feel compelled to address this issue in my artistic practice. The installation will be made from recycled materials, resembling an adhoc dwelling found at Calais refugee camps, and incorporating text and sound from field recordings made on location there. The installation will be presented for 10 days as Part of Journeys Festival International, and will be located outside The Whitworth Gallery, Oxford Road Manchester.
"I was first introduced to Matilda’s practice when I chose her work for the BA (Hons) Fine Art and Art History Manchester School of Art Award. I was very impressed by Matilda’s treatment of the refugee topic and the accomplished presentation of the final piece."

Why I need your help?
I have already received Arts Council Funding, but one of the conditions of this is that I raise the rest myself! This last bit of funding will make the project happen, I have a full free events program planned for the duration of the installation, and this can’t happen without the extra funding!
As well as being an artwork in its own right, I will also use the installation as a space for the local community to take part in a series of 5 free public activities. These will include: family friendly workshops, panel discussions and performances. I will work with local community organisations and refugee charities to deliver the work and connect with refugees and asylum seekers in Manchester. Any amount would be greatly appreciated, so check out the rewords for specific donations.
Let’s make this happen and hope you see you all at the festival!
